It’s my birthdaaaaaay! 🎈 This year, I want to start blogging more often and regularly. I really missed using this platform to connect with you guys and share more details of my life. I do like to keep my private life private, but I would like you guys to get to know me more, and I want to get to know you guys more – so here’s to 23 and diving DEEP! 😜
I asked in my IG stories to send in some questions and here are some of the most asked questions! 🙂
Did you move to LA?
Yes and no! We are here on a temporary basis until next April!
As many of you know, I moved to New York for college, and I never expected to love it as much as I did – enough to stay there for every break and decided almost instantly that NYC would be my forever-home. Because I loved it so much, I gave up practically every chance to see my parents and grandparents (which, to be honest, wasn’t a huge priority when I was in school). In December, I quit my first job out of college to create content full time. For me, this change sparked a want to travel as much as possible while I’ve been given this amazing opportunity to (by YOU GUYS)! And I also realized this freedom allowed me to be near my parents and see them as much as possible for perhaps the last time in my life. I know for a fact that I belong in NYC, and that my parents would never move to the east coast to be closer to me as they have their own lives, haha. 😅
So… tldr, we packed our bags to LA, have visited my home many times since we’ve been back on the west coast, and have lots of plans to travel in the next few months 🙂
Honestly, a lot more factors sparked this move, but that’s the short version! It’s been a good change for both of us but we are psyched to move back next year permanently!
Do you speak any other languages?
I speak Mandarin and Cantonese!
What camera do you use?
We use the Canon Rebel T5 with a 24 mm lens.
What did you study in college?
I double majored in biology and philosophy!
What products do you use in your hair? How often do you trim it?
I’m currently using the Ouai hair oil and am absolutely in love. I also really like the Biolage clay hair mask. I try not to overuse products for my hair and like to switch it up every few months! I also trim my hair every 3-4 months to keep it healthy.
What is your diet like?
My philosophy is everything in moderation. I LOVE FOOD so I hate restricting my diet to any particular foods or meals. I like to cook so I know what goes in my food and I monitor sodium/oil intake that way. I also am really lucky that I have a stereotypical “Asian metabolism” that keeps me thin (because I do not eat ice cream in moderation).
Future career and life goals?
To be brutally honest, I don’t know exactly, and at this point in my life, it feels good not to know. When I was young, all I’ve ever wanted to do was medicine, all I’d ever been exposed to was medicine, so I did EVERY POSSIBLE THING there is to do to pursue medicine. I worked in a lab all throughout college, I took my MCATs early, I took every internship and opportunity given to me so I could succeed at what I thought I wanted/needed to succeed in. Ever since I was 12-13, I thought I had my life planned out and it pretty much was.
Somewhere along the line I became miserable and overworked – the classes I took didn’t excite me, my lab slowly and slowly drained me – creating content and blogging were my outlets, and I never could’ve imagined this would be my job today. I’m taking initiative to learn as much as I can while I have this opportunity – from web design, photoshop, video-editing, to negotiating contracts, understanding my workload and managing my own business. Just because I’ve switched directions doesn’t mean I’m not working hard to learn new things every day – so 13 year old might be very disappointed that 23 year old me has no idea what the next 5 years are going to look like, but at this moment, I feel very free. 🕊
Proudest accomplishment(s) in life?
(1) Taking my MCATs to prove to myself I didn’t quit due to fear.
(2) Seizing the opportunity to quit my job and do something I really love!
Please let me know if you guys liked this blog post in the comments below! Can’t wait to share more xx

Awesome that we get to see another side of you here, it’s refreshing to see the human side 🙂 I like how you can be private but still a little bit with your followers to show them it’s not always easy and/or fun, that you too struggle along with us.

awesome waikei! btw, do you prefer your current lens than your previous 50mm lens 1.8fl?
Waikei Tong says
Thanks! I think the 24mm is definitely better for day-to-day photography but I love the 50mm for portraits (it creates amazing bokeh)!

I can totally relate to you! I thought I had my planned life out and would become a doctor. In college, I also majored in Biology and did everything in the Pre-med checklist. I was so miserable that I stopped studying and barely passed my classes. It took a while to convince myself that my passion wasn’t in medicine and since then, I’ve doing what I love and I’ve never felt so happy!

It feels so good that we relate! Definitely – the transition is super difficult, there were so many moments where I kept thinking “what am I doing with my life” or “did I waste the last 4-10 years”, but doing something you’re passionate and excited about is the most rewarding feeling, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Congrats on doing what you love!!!
