Happy Independence Day, my loves! 🇺🇸 I’m so happy to be sharing this blog post today because this has been one of the best days of summer so far. Going to Governor’s Island in the summer is a little bit of a tradition for me. If you don’t know what Governor’s Island is, it’s this tiny little island right off the bottom of Manhattan, accessible only by ferry. It’s pretty closed off and secluded from the rest of the world — there are no residences or shops, only a few food stands and trucks, a bike rental area and a little playground for kids. Most of the island is just walk-ways and bike tracks, which is pretty amazing if you just want to spend a day tanning, biking, and picnicking away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Ever since I moved to Brooklyn three years ago, I’ve gone religiously each summer with friends or with Jay just to enjoy the weather, practice my biking skills and soak up the incredible view that Governor’s Island offers. Since it’s right off the bottom of Manhattan, you get the most amazing view of the Financial District, the freedom tower, and even a peek of the Statue of Liberty (which is the coolest thing ever!) 🗽 Honoring our tradition, Jay and I packed a lunch of turkey sandwiches and cut fruit and embarked to Governor’s Island with high hopes!
I absolutely LOVE going to Governor’s Island with Jay. I love doing most things with him (couples, I know 🙄) but since he is a skateboarder, it feels pretty darn good to be able to keep up with his pace for once. What I mean is — he does not go anywhere without his skateboard, and ya girl has to walk pretty fast in her heels to be able to keep the pace of his skateboard rolling slowly next to me. It’s so nice to be able to ride a bike alongside his skateboarding and not feel rushed or slow and also just enjoy the breeze that biking gives you. Also, I’m not veeery good at biking, so since Governor’s Island doesn’t have a lot of cars, it feels a lot safer for me to bike around and not have to worry about a car honking at me or passing me with an inch to spare (BAD Santa Monica biking memories…) 🚲🚗
If you can’t tell from Instagram lately, I’ve been LOVING on gingham. I’m actually wearing a little red gingham number that I’m really excited about for tonight’s Fourth of July festivities. This cut-out romper is so much fun and one of my favorite pieces for summer so far. It’s incredibly lightweight, has an elastic back (which is good for fit) and has POCKETS. Tbh any romper or dress that has pockets can take my money, so the fact that this romper that I already love has pockets kind of takes the gold for me. I also have been on the lookout for pieces that show skin in a classy fashion lately — just because it’s ridiculously hot and humid in NYC in the summer, and I am slowly and sadly moving out of my crop top phase and age (ya girl is turning 22 this summer 😢). I’m also happy to tell you that this romper is on SALE and under 20 dollars! If that doesn’t make you want to pick one up right away, I don’t know what will! 🤷🏻♀️
But anyway, just happy to share these photos, and for those who didn’t know about Governor’s Island, this magical little place with you! I am currently marinating ribs and dreading going outside to get a few ingredients for dinner. We are taking full advantage of our new cast-iron grill and BBQing for the Fourth tonight, and hopefully going out to see the fireworks for a little after! 🎆 I’d love to know what your plans are for the Fourth tonight so leave me a comment down below! Have fun and be safe, guys and have a great night!! xo
